On November 30, billionaire tech tycoon Elon Musk held a “Show and Tell” event about his brain chip implant company Neuralink, which a group of physicians says is “mutilating and killing monkeys” by inserting a “brain-machine interface” in their bodies.
Musk announced the event on Twitter, which he now owns, while the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) launched a website highlighting exactly what goes on at Neuralink – and it is not pretty.
Sloppy Neuralink experiments conducted at UC Davis saw monkeys tortured as electrodes were forcibly injected through surgery. A lawsuit filed against the school by PCRM claims the animals “suffered infection” from these electrodes that were “placed in their brains.”
The suit also says an “unapproved substance” known as BioGlue was also used in the experiments. That BioGlue “killed monkeys by destroying portions of their brains.” (Related: Check out our earlier coverage about Musk’s cruel medical experiments on pigs.)
Lab notes were obtained from the experiments, which took place specifically at the California National Primate Research Center. Neuralink head surgeon Matthew MacDougall is mentioned along with a note, which stated: “Dr. MacDougall says edges smooth (not sharp).”
The more than 17,000 physicians that are part of PCRM say Neuralink paid UC Davis $1.4 million for use of the school’s facilities. Neuralink confirmed this and admitted that several animals had to be euthanized during the cruel experiments.
“As part of this work, two animals were euthanized at planned end dates to gather important histological data, and six animals were euthanized at the medical advice of the veterinary staff at UC Davis,” a blog post from Neuralink stated.
In a statement, UC Davis acknowledged the lawsuit while claiming that it “fully complied with the California Public Records Act” in responding to requests from PCRM.
“Indeed, additional materials have been supplied to PCRM since the conclusion of the research agreement with Neuralink.”
Another lab note written just two days after the female macaques surgery stated that the poor animal was “repeatedly vomiting, gasping, retching and had very little interaction with environment/observers.”
Days later on September 11, the monkey “just laid down” with another note indicating a “declining postop.” It was then recommended that the animal be euthanized within 24 hours.
In the lawsuit, BioGlue was blamed for the death. One of the lab notes also mentioned the adhesive as being the cause of death.
To Musk, however, this is all just fun and games. At last year’s “Show and Tell” event, a monkey with a brain implant was featured playing a video game with just its mind. Several months later, that monkey died from its implant (and the BioGlue?) as well.
The next step for Neuralink, according to Musk, is to begin implanting these same electrodes into human brains, presumably with BioGlue. How many people will end up dying because of Musk and his mad science endeavors?
“This is the stuff of nightmares,” one commenter wrote. “There is no humanity in this work.”
“This makes me feel absolutely sick,” wrote another. “Those poor creatures never asked to be involved in this vile experiment and the pain and bewilderment they must feel is beyond cruel.”
Someone else wrote that Musk himself needs to be subjected to these same cruel experiments because it is “disgusting” what he is doing to these poor animals.
“I do not think he would like it very much,” this person wrote about Musk. “If they want to test things, then do it on humans – preferably Musk and the rest of the soulless billionaires.”
