A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food revealed that Perilla frutescens (perilla), which is full of alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), can help treat or prevent neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. For the study, researchers observed the protective effect of three kinds of vegetable oils with different fatty acid compositions against cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) mouse models.
The researchers concluded that ALA-rich perilla oil could potentially be used to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
